About the opportunity 

Provides technical knowledge and expertise to the Chief Investigator, Senior Research Academics and the research team to support to support the development of systematic reviews that will inform international clinical practice guidelines on all aspects of kidney disease This includes conducting literature searches, appraising literature and meta-analysis, and preparing evidence summaries to support the development of clinical practice guidelines on all aspects of kidney disease. The role will also involve a range of other research activities relevant to systematic reviews and guideline development, disseminating systematic review findings, and providing methods support to authors conducting systematic reviews in kidney disease and transplantation.

  • tertiary qualifications likely with Honours in appropriate discipline with relevant experience in related field. May have (or be working towards) completing further studies such as PhD or have extensive specialist experience in the field of research
  • extensive experience in developing and working on research projects, including expertise in using research protocols, experimental design, ethics submissions and grant applications
  • high-level knowledge and skills in statistical techniques and critical appraisal required for systematic reviews of randomised controlled trials
  • experience in writing of systematic reviews and have published a Cochrane systematic review/s or similar.

Extensive experience in developing and working on research projects, including expertise in using research protocols, experimental design, ethics submissions and grant applications and Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills with sound negotiating and conflict resolution skills and a demonstrated level of tact and discretion in dealing with day to day operational matters.

The Sydney School of Public Health is one of eight schools within the Sydney Medical School and is a network of individuals, research groups and centres that offer a range of education and research opportunities. The former Department of Public Health and Community Medicine, the forerunner to the Sydney School of Public Health, was the oldest and largest department of public health in Australia. It was originally established in 1930 as the Commonwealth School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine and was incorporated into the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Sydney in 1987. The mission of the School is to provide internationally recognised leadership in public health by advancing and disseminating knowledge in the public health disciplines. We do this by providing high quality, accessible education; conducting outstanding, high impact research; and participating effectively in professional, governmental and community activities.

This position will be based within the Centre for Kidney Research at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, which is part of the Sydney School of Public Health. The Centre for Kidney Research at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead consists of a group of up to 30 researchers, doctors, scientists, nurses and administration staff, working towards the goal of improving kidney health. CKR is one of the oldest and largest kidney research groups in the Southern Hemisphere. The Centre provides insight into new treatments, methods of diagnosis, prevention and the enhancement of the quality of life of children and adults with, or at risk of, kidney disease. This work is supported by the Government through the NHMRC and ARC, by the hospital, and by generous support from the community. Cochrane Kidney and Transplant is located within the Centre for Kidney Research (http://kidneyandtransplant.cochrane.org/), and is one of the 53 Cochrane Review groups that provide up-to-date, accurate information about the effects of health care. Cochrane Kidney and Transplant produce and disseminate systematic reviews of healthcare interventions in kidney disease and transplantation.

The Research Officer will be responsible for contributing to research activities under the supervision of senior researchers in the Centre for Kidney Research.
