Research Software Developer: Integration & Optimisation of Carbonate Models

Faculty of Science
School of Geosciences
Reference no. 2003/0917

  • Opportunity to provide a framework for robust model development of complex, non-linear carbonate system models
  • Located at Camperdown Campus
  • Full-time fixed term for 12 months, remuneration package: $106Kp.a. which includes base salary, leave loading and up to 17% super

About the opportunity

The position will focus on the development, engineering, and maintenance of open-source time dependent carbonate 1D and 3D (dimensional) platform/reef growth and destruction model. The candidate will consider numerical forward modelling from a Bayesian optimisation perspective by providing a framework for robust model development of complex, non-linear carbonate system models.

In this position, you will:

  • coordinate and be responsible for the development of major areas of carbonate platform model (Badlands)
  • proactively plan and execute software version upgrade releases and custom interfaces
  • diagnose and resolve software problems quickly and efficiently
  • consistently apply generally accepted programming standards and techniques

About you

The University values courage and creativity; openness and engagement; inclusion and diversity; and respect and integrity. As such, we see the importance in recruiting talent aligned to these values in the pursuit of research excellence. We are looking for a Research Software Developer who possesses:

  • tertiary qualifications (B.Sc. or Diploma) in physics, geophysics or closely related field
  • expertise in Python, Fortran/C
  • expertise in computer science, and knowledge of cross-platform programming
  • experience in numerical methods, and high performance computing

About us

This position will be part of a team working on the ARC-ITRH Basin Genesis Hub “Geodynamics and evolution of sedimentary systems” (EarthByte Group: https://www.earthbyte.org/) in collaboration with the Centre for Translational Data Science/Sydney Informatics Hub (https://informatics.sydney.edu.au/).

The Hub is a showcase of connecting “Big Data” analysis and high-performance computing in an open innovation framework. The hub is fusing multidimensional data into 5D basin models (space and time, with uncertainty estimates) by coupling the evolution of mantle flow, crustal deformation, erosion and sedimentary processes using open-source modelling tools. See here for more details:
