About the opportunity 

The NHMRC Clinical Trials Centre (CTC) is a fully externally funded research centre operating for over 25 years. It runs large multicentre investigator-initiated clinical trials and provides expertise and infrastructure for trials run by external groups.  It undertakes research aiming at improving both the conduct of trials and the resulting clinical evidence. The CTC participates in translational research, conducts methodological research in relation to clinical trials, reviews and synthesises evidence from completed trials, supervises postgraduate students in all of these areas, offers postgraduate degrees in clinical trials research, runs short courses to train people for Australian medical research.

The Associate Oncology Program Manager is responsible for the overall management, coordination and administration of projects or allocated clinical trials relevant to specific research areas covering oncology (AOPM). 

The team of AOPMs work on the portfolio of studies in the Oncology Program consisting of over 40 specialised staff working as Study Coordinators, Data Managers, Study Monitors and Clinical Trial Assistants in the tumour streams of Gastro-intestinal, Gynaecological, Brain, Lung and Urogenital research and reporting through to the Oncology Program Manager.  The AOPMs are involved in development or operational activities depending on education and training, experience and opportunities. 

The activities range from:

  • concept and protocol development,
  • grant applications and reporting,
  • scientific/research/operations committee support,
  • budgeting and financial management,
  • HREC and governance submissions and,
  • oversight of trial operations including data collection, onsite monitoring and data cleaning.

The role will involve working with other senior staff at the CTC e.g. clinical investigators and biostatisticians for protocol development and with interim and final analyses and poster and manuscript publications.

The role may also involve the line management of more junior staff. 

The successful candidate will have a background in health, experience in project management and detailed knowledge of clinical research practices including ethics and regulatory requirements of trials.  Exposure to quality assurance and control is also a bonus.

  • A degree in Health Science or Allied Health field or similar education/training and relevant experience
  • Highly developed project planning, coordination, organisation and time management skills
  • Proven ability to identify problems, make recommendations and implement appropriate solutions
  • Well-developed written and verbal communication, consultation and interpersonal skills
  • The ability to work in a complex and challenging environment
  • Detailed knowledge of clinical research practices

The key to success of the applicant is the ability to work with minimal supervision to manage resources relating to projects which may include line management, adapting and applying SOP’s and University’s policies, trial protocols and other regulatory requirements.
