About the opportunity 

The incumbent will work as an integral member of the NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence in Indigenous Health and Alcohol to conduct research projects undertaken at the Centre. Under general supervision from the Deputy Director, the incumbent will work with an increasing degree of autonomy as they gain skills and experience. As well as undertaking projects on alcohol in Indigenous Australian contexts, the incumbent will also be involved in other work undertaken by the research team. This will include preparation of grant applications and submissions, preparation of compliance reporting and contributing to writing of scientific publications or with monitoring routine aspects of the research or with sourcing information to aid research work. The incumbent will contribute to the development and design of accessible reports back to Aboriginal communities and health services, and to associated health promotion resources. The incumbent will also contribute to development of appropriate resources to support the academic development of research trainees and post-graduate research students.

  • relevant doctoral qualification or near completion of PhD
  • relevant knowledge of research methods in substance use, mental health or a related field
  • intermediate quantitative skills including statistical analysis
  • experience with mentoring/tutoring undergraduate students in relation to academic skills
  • experience with translating research findings back to communities or study sites
  • experience in preparing and submitting ethics applications
  • respect for Aboriginal culture
  • excellent skills in Microsoft Office, Adobe Professional, Adobe InDesign or other design software and EndNote
  • proficiency using R (statistical) software and ability to perform analysis in other software such as SPSS.

Experience with working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples would be highly regarded.

About us

The NHMRC ‘Centre of Research Excellence in Indigenous Health and Alcohol’ is led by Prof Kate Conigrave in the Discipline of Addiction Medicine at the University of Sydney. This Centre of Research Excellence works in partnership with Aboriginal community controlled health services, Aboriginal agencies and communities across Australia and with a number of other clinical services. As an integral member of the Centre, the Research Associate will work on research projects on alcohol and health among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (Indigenous) peoples. The position will in particular contribute to three current research initiatives: supporting Aboriginal health services to reduce the harms from alcohol; finding an easier way for Indigenous Australians to describe what they drink using an iPad app; and creating pathways for Indigenous Australians to lead the way in alcohol research.
