About the opportunity 

The Kolling Institute of Medical Research is the major biomedical research institute at the Royal North Shore Hospital and is a joint venture with the University of Sydney. It has over 200 staff and students in a number of major research divisions. The position is based in the Institute of Bone and Joint Research (IBJR), a division of the Kolling Institute, with laboratories located on level 10 of the Kolling Building.

The Research Assistant provides technical and operational support to the Laboratory Director and Postdoctoral Fellow leading NHMRC and industry-funded projects, investigating the molecular regulation of osteoarthritis joint pathology and pain, and the therapeutic benefit of novel treatment strategies to slow disease progression and ameliorate pain.

Your duties will include preparing relevant materials in collaboration with other research team members, performing and having primary responsibility for specific aspects of the research work, and facilitating the efficient operation of the research laboratory by providing essential technical and operational support. The incumbent will be expected to coordinate the activities associated with research projects, and work towards ensuring that experiments are prepared for and run smoothly. This may also include responsibility for assisting with any lab work performed by students, and preparing equipment for experiments that are carried out.

• a thorough technical understanding of research in the areas of focus and the ability to undertake research and analysis on specific defined issues
• tertiary qualifications in appropriate discipline with Honours. Completed postgraduate qualifications (or working towards) will be an added advantage
• demonstrated experience in animal experiments including knowledge of monitoring and maintaining animal models
• extensive experience in conducting and reporting on laboratory research projects including carrying out scientific literary searches, and preparing literary review for further analysis
• an understanding of the relevant aspects of Work Health and Safety Policy
• excellent interpersonal verbal and written communication skills.
