About the opportunity 

The School of Medical Sciences (SoMS) is a research intensive and major player in Australian and international biomedical research across a range of fields.

Reporting to the Associate Dean, School of Medical Sciences or delegate, the Laboratory Manager will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of a group of laboratories in the School of Medical Sciences located in the Medical Foundation Building. The incumbent will develop and implement protocols and guidelines to ensure all laboratories meet legal WHS requirements and also assess and manage issues relating to research and building infrastructure.

  • Postgraduate qualifications in medical science or a related discipline and extensive experience working in and managing research intensive laboratories
  • A demonstrated knowledge in WHS policies and procedures in a laboratory operating environment, specifically Australian Standards: AS/NZ 2243 and PC2 and OGTR requirements.
  • Previous facility management experience including in-depth knowledge of contract and contractor review and management
  • Strong relationship building and engagement skills and the ability to liaise with various stakeholders within and outside the University community
  • The ability to develop, analyse and improve contingency plan systems
  • Flexibility is essential as the role will require the incumbent to be on call after hours
  • Good problem solving skills and the ability to provide advice and react to protocol in an emergency
  • Previous project and financial management experience
  • Strong negotiation, conflict and issue management skills.

To be successful in this role, the preferred candidate must be comfortable working autonomously and will be expected to take initiative in the day to day management of laboratories in meeting their expected deliverables.
