About the opportunity 

Due to the overwhelming success and growth of the division, we have an exciting role available for a Development Associate, Science to develop and implement broad-based fundraising programs to support the University’s programs and initiatives, with a focus on education, research and outreach in Science.

With guidance from the Associate Director Development, Major Gifts you will develop your consultative selling skills to build and manage meaningful relationships with donors, alumni and friends. You will have the opportunity to work with leading academics to align donor’s philanthropic aspirations with meaningful projects in ground-breaking research and technology areas. You will also develop skills in managing funding opportunities to enhance the teaching capability of the University.

  • business development and consultative selling techniques
  • managing complex and diverse relationships required to operate effectively in a large organisation with multiple stakeholders

To be successful in this role, you will be a self-motivated, energetic and a target-driven individual, with a passion in developing a meaningful fundraising career. You will be comfortable working with high level individuals across a wide range of subject matters. The role will suit someone who thrives on challenge, has a thirst for knowledge and can think on their feet. Some knowledge of, or interest in, science and scientific research is desirable.

About us

Our “INSPIRED” campaign continues to break fundraising records in terms of dollars raised and numbers of donors. Achievements to date include:

  • the sale of Picasso’s portrait Jeune fille endormie at auction for $19.8 million to fund four academic chairs at our multidisciplinary medical research hub, the Charles Perkins Centre, which specialises in obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and related conditions
  • $20 million to establish a new collaborative centre for project leadership
  • $34 million to establish a multi-year research program to advance the use of medicinal cannabinoids in the treatment of chronic disease.

The Development team is responsible for providing the direction, coordination and management of the fundraising programs for the University, including the Sydney Development Fund, major gift and planned giving programs, and INSPIRED – the fundraising campaign to support the University of Sydney.

The position works closely with academic leaders and researchers within the Faculty of Science. The Faculty plays a key role in Australia's ability to compete scientifically on the world stage, attracting world-class researchers and Australia’s best science students who share and enjoy a rich inter-disciplinary research and learning environment. The Faculty’s research is aimed at advancing knowledge and helping our society and our country solve our most pressing problems. The Faculty’s diverse research portfolio includes the Schools of Chemistry, Geosciences, Life and Environmental Sciences, Mathematics & Statistics, Physics, Psychology, and the Unit for History & Philosophy of Science.
