The Sydney School of Architecture, Design and Planning at the University is focused on the built environment and uses methods of architecture, design, planning, science, art, engineering, IT, and social sciences to analyse, understand and design innovative environments.

The School of Architecture, Design and Planning is looking to grow its research capabilities in the area of smart cities, with a focus on integrative and multidisciplinary research that builds on the existing research strengths in the school as well as other parts of the University. These smart city research strengths include, but are not limited to, digital placemaking, smart mobility, smart buildings, liveability, urban interaction design and urban data analytics. We are seeking a self-motivated and well-qualified researcher to conduct theoretical and applied research in this area. The appointee’s research focus is expected to be in one or a combination of smart mobility, smart governance, and smart infrastructure. It is further expected that the research outcomes will have implications for industry, government or community organisations.

We are seeking to appoint an outstanding, independent, early career researcher with a strong publication record relative to opportunity.

In this role you will:

  • design and implement an innovative research project on the processes and implications of smart cities
  • disseminate the results via publications and conference presentations
  • assist in the preparation of grant proposals and research reports
  • assist in the coordination of smart city research projects
  • perform other responsibilities in collaboration with members of the smart cities research group.

To be successful you will need:

  • a PhD in design, planning, architecture, geography or other field relevant to smart city research
  • a demonstrated track record in urban research and/or excellent potential to make a significant contribution to urban research
  • detailed knowledge of relevant research methodologies
  • capacity (as evidenced in a two-page research proposal attached to your application) to design an innovative research project in smart cities
  • excellent English verbal and written communication skills.

 Desirable for appointment is your:

  • evidence of and/or capacity for cross-disciplinary research
  • demonstrated knowledge and capacity for engagement with external research partners.
