The University of Sydney is Australia's first university and has an outstanding global reputation for academic and research excellence. It employs over 7600 permanent staff, supporting over 60,000 students.

The Charles Perkins Centre (CPC) within the University of Sydney is dedicated to easing the global burden of obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and related conditions through innovative research and teaching. Our goal is to understand the fundamental mechanisms of disease, which is essential for defining what might be possible by way of prevention, intervention and treatment. The CPC combines laboratory groups from many schools and faculties across the campus in an interdisciplinary environment.

The School of Life and Environmental Sciences (SoLES) is a new School consisting of staff previously in the Schools of Biological Sciences and Molecular Biosciences, the Faculty of Veterinary Science, and the Faculty of Agriculture and Environment. It forms part of the Division of Natural Sciences (DNS). The DNS enrolled 6,177 undergraduate students, 1,129 postgraduate students and 1,108 international full fee paying students (u/g and p/g) in 2014.

A key strength area of the CPC and the School of Life and Environmental Sciences is our ability to comprehensively characterise the entire protein complement of cells and tissues (the proteome), using state-of-the-art biochemical and mass spectrometry-based approaches. Using these techniques, the successful candidate will analyse the response of model organisms, including mice, to intermittent fasting regimes known to have beneficial effects with regard to disease risk and metabolic health. These data can be used to define the mechanisms responsible for the beneficial effects of intermittent fasting (IF), which will allow improvements in the efficacy of the IF protocols, highlight points of possible synergy with other treatments and improve safety.
