The Faculty of Education and Social Work is currently one of 16 faculties at the University. In 2017, it will become the Sydney School of Education and Social Work within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

The faculty is a national and international leader in education, social work and social policy through excellence in professional education and rigorous research-informed understanding of the social, political and cultural contexts of education, social work and social policy. The faculty critically engages theory, policy and practice in ways designed to transform communities and individual lives.

The social work degrees offered at the University of Sydney include the Bachelor of Social Work and Master of Social Work (Qualifying) complying with the University of Sydney policies and procedures and Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) accreditation guidelines.

The Director of Field Education is an academic position and represents an exciting opportunity to work alongside internationally recognised experts in the field.

As the successful applicant you will:

  • for an initial period of three years hold the position of Director of Field Education and continue in this role thereafter (by negotiation and mutual agreement) or transition into a research and teaching lecturer role at the end of the three year period
  • provide field education leadership to the faculty, stakeholders and the community by influencing and expanding knowledge and practice and building and cultivating relationships to facilitate the provision of placements and enhance our reputation
  • work closely with the field education managers to implement the field education program on a practical level
  • represent the Social Work & Policy Studies Field Education programs at the university, state and national level in consultation with the Associate Dean Social Work, Program Directors and other senior staff
  • contribute to teaching, unit co-ordination, design and program evaluation (at all levels) in units of study including (but not limited to) student field placement and research student supervision
  • be research active making contributions to research and scholarship at university and national level
  • potentially supervise HDR students
  • successfully acquire competitive grants within the University and externally, either individually or as part of a team.

To ensure your success in this role you will need:

  • a PhD or Doctorate of Social work, or evidence of near completion or submission
  • a social work qualification with eligibility for membership of the AASW
  • knowledge of current theory and practice in relation to fieldwork education
  • recent social work practice experience and an understanding of theory and practice in an Australian context (including national initiatives such as Health Workforce Australia)
  • relevant tertiary teaching experience, the ability to further develop teaching expertise, and the ability and willingness to use technology for teaching and learning
  • a strong record of research and publications
  • the ability to supervise student field placements
  • the ability to coordinate, lead and support other field educators and associates (as relevant) in academic education and research and field placements, ensuring accreditation and academic standards are met
  • teamwork skills and the ability and willingness to contribute to professional and community collaborations and academic administration.
