The Cancer Genetics Diagnostic Laboratory is a NATA-accredited diagnostic facility within the Kolling Institute. The Laboratory performs diagnostic genetic testing for hereditary Endocrine disorders including Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia type 2, Von Hippel Lindau syndrome, hereditary phaeochromocytoma/paraganglioma syndromes, familial hypocalciuric hypercalcaemia, autosomal dominant hypocalcaemia, thyroid hormone resistance syndrome, and others.

We are seeking a Senior Scientist who will provide a managerial role in the Cancer Genetics Diagnostic Laboratory. This position will be responsible for oversight of genetic testing and ensuring that the laboratory quality system is implemented and followed at all times in accordance with NATA accreditation.

This includes supervision of staff, staff training, organization of work flow, oversight of genetic tests and protocols, performance of QC/QA activities, sample tracking, oversight of DNA extraction and sequencing, generation of written diagnostic reports, discussion of available tests and test results with referring medical practitioners, liaison with other pathology staff as required, and writing reports for NATA and other agencies. The Scientist will also be closely involved with research staff and students in the Cancer Genetics Laboratory, and as such will be involved in translation of research findings into the diagnostic setting.

You will require:

  • tertiary qualifications with Honours in appropriate discipline and/or relevant experience in related field, may have (or be working towards) postgraduate qualifications
  • experience in using genetic testing protocols in molecular biology (DNA extraction, PCR, sequencing)
  • experience in carrying out scientific literary searches in genetic testing, and preparing literary reviews for further analysis
  • proven communication, organisational and documentation skills
  • demonstrated familiarity with diagnostic genetic testing, including adhaerence to quality control
  • previous managerial responsibility.

Desirable:

  • previous managerial responsibility
  • interest in teaching and working in academia
  • familiarity with “next-generation” (massively parallel) sequencing technology
  • previous experience working in a NATA-accredited (or equivalent) chemical pathology laboratory.
