The University of Sydney has the largest cohort of higher degree research (HDR) students in NSW constituting almost 10% of the total student body. The HDR Student Administration Centre (the Centre) sits within the DVC (Registrar) portfolio and is designed to provide students with single point of contact for their administrative requirements.  The Centre works in conjunction with academic and administrative staff in the faculties and other professional services units of the University to support candidature from the point of enrolment to graduation.

The Director of the Centre provides the leadership of this unit in delivering the end-to-end management of the higher degree research student lifecycle.

We are seeking a Head for the HDR Administration Centre to be responsible for the operational and strategic management of the Centre. This includes the overall general management of support for academic staff and students in all systems and processes applicable to HDR administration. In collaboration with the Deputy Registrar you will be responsible for development of strategy, policy and planning for the Centre, translating the University’s strategic priorities and managing operational impacts. You will also be accountable for the general management of all operational, financial and administrative systems, processes, and programs to meet University requirements, ensuring compliance with all relevant legislation and regulations.

To be successful you will need to demonstrate:

  • postgraduate qualifications together with extensive relevant experience
  • sound administrative skills and a proven record of successful staff management
  • ability to work both independently and as part of a team, taking initiative and exercising sound judgement in resolving matters that may arise as part of normal daily work
  • strong problem solving skills
  • excellent time and workload management skills and the ability to prioritise workload during busy periods
  • extensive and proven effective management experience at a senior level, together with flexibility, capacity to adapt to changing circumstances and environments
  • financial management experience including experience in managing budgets and controlling income and expenditure
  • proven record of organisational and decision making ability together with strong analytical and interpersonal skills
  • exceptional communication skills (both verbal and written)
  • experience in the supervision, training, mentoring and performance management of staff.

Highly desirable:

  • previous experience in the higher education sector, government or multi-faceted organisation
  • previous experience in HDR student management
  • extensive knowledge of University policies and procedures and administrative processes within a tertiary environment.

Remuneration package: Competitive remuneration package is available (consisting of a base salary, leave loading and up to 17% employer’s contribution to super)
