About the Role 

An excellent opportunity has become available for a Research Fellow (RF) to work on an exciting project "SpaceCraft Autonomy and Onboard AI for Next Generation Space Systems (SCARLET-?)" funded by the SmartSat CRC and in collaboration with the industry partner SAAB Group as well as other research and industry partners including Airbus, Ascension, Leonardo, University of South Australia, and Deakin University. 

As the RF, you will carry out research in the project with an aim to develop a novel multiagent system for autonomously managing and configuring distributed space systems with the aim to improve their resiliency.  You will contribute towards developing solutions for a number of critical problems in distributed autonomic computing for autonomous resilient satellite constellations including mission-based situational awareness, goal-driven management and decision-making for distributed space systems via task and resources allocation and negotiation. 

In this highly collaborative position, you will work closely with other project team members, including Chief Investigators, R&D Software Engineers and external partners (SAAB Group, Airbus, Ascension, Leonardo, University of South Australia, and Deakin University).  You will be expected to work with a high degree of autonomy and as such is required to demonstrate initiative and responsibility in achieving the position’s goals and pursuing research directions in the project under the leadership of the Chief Investigators, Associate Professor Bao Vo. The position is expected to involve in the supervision of PhD students who will also be funded by the project. The position will be for a fixed-term duration of 3 years (with the possibility of extension subject to funding availability).

About You  
To be suitable for this role you will need to have experience in the below key accountabilities: 

  • An emerging track record of research and development as evidenced by a range of publications in peer reviewed journals and conferences
  • Excellent oral and communication skills
  • Knowledge and demonstrated experience in multi-agent technology, artificial intelligence, autonomic computing and distributed constraint optimisation problems
  • Knowledge and demonstrated experience in resilient systems and distributed space systems


Qualifications
An earned doctoral qualification (or nearing completion) in Computer Science, Software Engineering or other relevant fields
