Some primary school students will continue getting a real-world lesson in market economics with a grocery store in their school hall.

The supermarket in the NSW town of Walgett burned down last year, but it has been allowed to operate out of the local primary school hall.

It was important to keep the IGA open, as it was the only grocery store nearby.

It means hands-on sports like basketball have given way to hand baskets and market stalls.

The NSW Department of Education has now extended the lease for the supermarket to stay, despite reports of inconvenience to students.

Fruit and veg will stay next to phys-ed until the start of August, and authorities are understood to be seeking a longer term location.

The state’s Education Department has acknowledged the town needs the supermarket to keep operating, but says it wants students to be able to use the hall again for assemblies, creative and performing arts, sport and lunchtime activities.
