Funding of  $4.5 million has been awarded to the Defence Teaming Centre to create 2,300 new training places to boost skills and qualifications for South Australia's defence industries.

The Defence Teaming Centre's successful application through Round Four of the Productivity Places Program (PPP) for Existing Workers was made in conjunction with defence industry prime contractors BAE Systems Australia, Lockheed Martin Australia, Raytheon Australia Pty Ltd, and ASC AWD Shipbuilder Pty Ltd and members of their supply chains.

The allocation will fund 1,072 nationally endorsed training places at Certificate IV level, 945 at Diploma level and 288 at Advanced Diploma level. Training will be towards qualifications such as accounting; computer systems engineering; electrical engineering; manufacturing; project management; records management; building and construction; health and safety; human resources; marketing; purchasing; and transport and logistics

The PPP for Existing Workers is worth about $117 million over four years and will provide 39,000 training places for existing workers across South Australia by the middle of 2012.

The Productivity Places Program is a joint Federal and State Government funded initiative as part of the Australian Government’s Skilling Australia for the Future strategy that provides up to 90 per cent subsidy towards nationally endorsed qualifications at Certificate IV, Diploma and Advanced Diploma Levels. In South Australia the fund is administered by the Department of Further Education, Employment, Science & Technology (DFEEST).  The training program is jointly funded by the Federal Government (50 per cent), the South Australian Government (40 per cent) and industry (10 per cent).
