Queensland Premier Anna Bligh has hosted a roundtable on international education with participants across the education industry.

“The international student market in Queensland has suffered a perfect storm of setbacks in recent months,” Ms Bligh said.

“This includes the Federal Government imposing stronger requirements on student visas , the images of natural disasters broadcast across the globe and a strong Australian dollar, which have all combined to deter international students from studying in Queensland. “

The Premier was joined in the roundtable by senior ministers, key education representatives from private and TAFE education institutions and vocational and language education providers.

“The international education and training sector directly and indirectly employs more than 17,000 Queenslanders so it is in everyone’s interest that the sector gets back on its feet as quickly as possible.” Ms Bligh said.
