A new scholarship program has been put together by The University of Sydney; the funds are aimed at developing engineering leaders to inspire undergraduates in the degree.

The scholarship will provide $72,000 over four years in financial support, industry mentoring and an annual professional experience program.

The University has partnered with a number of big players in the engineering sector to create the scholarship, including Laing O’Rourke and the John Grill Centre for Project Leadership.

David Stewart from Laing O’Rourke Australia says: “We believe these scholarships are the most valuable engineering undergraduate scholarships available in Australia and we are extremely proud to support to such an important initiative. The students will not only gain the relevant academic experience but they will also spend time working with us in the field allowing them to graduate with a much more developed sense of what leadership and engineering practice means in today’s work environment.”

Professor Archie Johnston, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and IT sees it as a win for education and the industry, saying “the new scholarships support the university's endeavours to meet the future leadership needs of industry. Building on our advanced engineering program, the scholarships demonstrate our commitment to leadership in engineering education.”
