The Productivity Commission is working on a review of Australia’s Closing the Gap agreement.

The Closing the Gap agreement from 2020 included pledges to improve life outcomes experienced by Indigenous Australians. It also featured a three-yearly review mechanism to monitor improvements and find places where emphasis may be required.

Broadly, Closing the Gap seeks four major reforms - shared decision-making and strengthening of formal relationships, measures to enhance Indigenous Australia’s community-controlled sector, ways to make government organisations more accessible, and efforts to improve data access for better informed decisions.

The Productivity Commission is undertaking a review, and the government says it will give First Nations representatives a “genuine say” in how the review is undertaken.

The timeline includes a draft report that will be released some time before a final report is delivered by the end of next year.
